Trail 5: UT Arboretum

Overview

This is a gem of a hike that is off the radar for many in Knoxville, as it is tucked away in nearby Oak Ridge. Start your hike at a trailhead that offers many hiking options. We recommend walking up the paved path past botanical specimens, including “unique conifers”! Circle around park facilities past a pretty field and forests. Upon returning to the start, there are other trails to the different ecological zones represented in an area that is worth a visit; we like the trails near the marshy area with the clear creek, perfect for splashing in warm weather. Suitable for kids of all ages.

  • Explore some of the many other trails nearby. The trail we featured meanders through a very small section of a large, diverse park. The Nature Book Trail is a great trail to add on to your hike. There are many others; check out the map at the UT Arboretum website (https://utarboretum.tennessee.edu/) to learn more.
  • Bring the balance bikes and kids’ bikes and stop by Haw Ridge and its kids’ pump track. Nearby Haw Ridge Park features the Dirtlab Mountain Bike Skill Park, a great spot for kids riding balance bikes and pedal bikes to hone their skills and build confidence!
